"Saint John the Baptist was the son of Zachary and Elizabeth, who was the cousin of the Mother of God.  He is called a prophet for he received from God the Mission to announce and prepare the people for the coming of Christ.  His name was designated by the angel who announced his birth to his father.

It is the belief of the Church that John the Baptist was born free of original sin, having been sanctified in his mother's womb..."
