As the first son of the Marquis of Castiglione, Aloysius was entitled to carry on the family name, nobility, and wealth. Instead, he chose to renounce all the titles and power he could have received by becoming a Jesuit priest. Though he lived only 23 years, his life was so devoted to God that when St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi saw him in a vision after his death she said, "O how great is the glory enjoyed by Aloysius, the son of Ignatius! ...We have saints (relics) in our church (the Carmelite) that do not possess such glory."
